Phase 03

Retention and Stabilisation

Once alignment is complete, a retention device (fixed or removable) is fitted to lock your teeth in their new position. This phase is essential to prevent your teeth from reverting to their original position.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about invisible orthodontics

Are they as effective as fixed braces?

For most mild to moderate cases, yes. Very complex cases (severe rotations, skeletal misalignments) may still require fixed braces. Your initial assessment determines the best option.

Do the aligners hurt?

You may feel pressure and mild discomfort for the first 2–3 days with each new aligner — a sign they're working. There's no pain from metal brackets or wires.

Can I eat with the aligners in?

No. They must always be removed for eating and drinking (except water). This is one of the main advantages over fixed braces.

How many hours a day do I need to wear them?

20 to 22 hours a day. Wearing them less compromises your treatment and can significantly extend it.

What if I lose an aligner?

Contact the clinic straight away — usually you'll move to the next aligner or go back to the previous one, depending on your treatment stage.
